This is a YU Advise development session – where York’s university-wide advising community and all employees can learn together.

This workshop provides a brief overview of career development theory, a complex and recursive process (not linear as the majority of our students believe). We will share typical student concerns and how York’s Career Centre responds. You will gain insight into the student question of ‘how does my degree relate to my career direction?’ and work with the Career Centre's Career Decision Making Model. You will be exposed to the key career resources to which you can direct students.

In this session you will:

  • understand how career decisions are made (or not made!);
  • identify three key career development theories and how they apply to York students;
  • support an undecided student expressing career concerns;
  • make effective referrals to the Career Centre and utilize Career Centre resources.

Who Should Attend: This course is for all levels of staff; from those seeking foundational learning, to those wishing to build on their existing capabilities with advanced levels of knowledge and skill about career development for advising for students.
